(Guimaraes, Portugal: A city of youth fired up by its art)
We realize New Years has officially passed, but if you didn’t take your vacation getaway due to work, now is a good time to consider the jump-off. Besides, your boss is probably in a very good mood after vacationing and freshly arriving back into the office mid January. Here’s a tip sheet of sexy places to consider: New York Times, “Where to Go”. The New York Times writes a comprehensive article on 41 spots to check out — from Santiago Chile, to Koh Samui Thailand, to Guimaraes, Portugal.

(Corsica)
The Huffington Post did a cool roundup of Best Travel Spots in 2010. Included are London’s Mark’s Bar, Venice’s Venissa, and Corsica, one of Europe’s best kept secrets. Huffington Post, “Best of Travel Finds”.
If all else fails, you can treat February 1st as the New Year… hey, a big chunk of the world starts their year on February 1st… Happy Chinese New Year!

We’re not sure what to say about this preposterous graphic, except the fact we’re amused that Lolcano lava is ejected from an OMG mountain.
Gosh we’re so ecstatic about our First Tech President. After wrapping up another State of the Union address, our President went straight to YouTube to answer questions from people like… you… who’s reading this blog post now.
YouTube even created a fancy State of the Union Homepage to stream Obama’s speech live on Tuesday night. On Friday, the answers were given.. check it out.
It looks like some pranksters are back at it again. Since 2008, some losers from Canada began to crank call hotels around the United States. In 2009, they hit up both Orlando and Orange Country Hotels and caused some chaos.
Here is how it works:
A prankster will call a hotel and request to be connected to a specific room. The prankster will inform the guest that a particular incident such as a fire or gas leak is occurring in the hotel that would require the guest assistance. The guest is directed to commit bizarre acts such as activate fire sprinklers, fire alarms and throw televisions through a window.

(Watch Out: The PrankNETs are back)

(Sunrise in Iceland. Where else?)
Today’s favorite Tumblr is all about sunrises and we suspect sunsets. Some are not even taken during either moment, but nonetheless, there is pretty light within all the landscapes. All we know is that we get lost in these images photographed around the world, most during that precious moment only a few of us behold… or as Ponyboy says: “Nothing Gold Can Stay” (or was that Robert Frost?).
Take a look at Eighteen Seconds Before Sunrise
In our endless quest to find creative new videos to hit the internet, we bring you the new track for Frankie and the Heartstrings called “Hunger” found on Wichita Recordings. The mind who created this lo-fi universe is Jake Sumner, a young director we all have our eyes on, and who is furiously creating an impressive body of work. Did we mention he can also beat anyone hands down in a “dance-off” at a club? The man has skills
We stopped Jake during his whirlwind travel schedule to ask him a few questions about his inspirations, fond childhood memories, and living in the Congo.
George Condo is one of the heroes of the 1980’s East Village art scene. He was close buds with Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Schnabel. Along with these names, Condo was instrumental in the international revival of painting in the 1980s. He’s been a singular voice in American and European art for almost three decades.
The New Museum is finally assembling his career and gracing us with the collection in a show called George Condo: Mental States showing from January 26th to May 8, 2011 on the 3rd and 4th floors at The New Museum.

To use his own words, his paintings “reflect the madness of everyday life” with meticulous attention to naturalistic detail coupled with elements of the grotesque and the absurd.
An active and prolific artist, Los Angeles based Clayton Campbell is well known for his various photo projects that stimulate cross cultural interest about how people view themselves both now and in the future in a post 9-11 reality. Check it out for yourself. Doesn’t this photo just scream “Hollywood Boulevard” and isn’t it completely apt since we’re in the midst of the Los Angeles award season?

LALIKEITIS, 2009 – Clayton Campbell
In celebration of Campbell’s genius, The Standard and Artillery are proud to present a new book Context Clayton Campbell, an introduction to the 40 year career of the artist.

As some of you may or may not know, the ONLY place to shop in New York City (well, at least the only place for STAN to shop) is the uber-luxurious Bergdorf Goodman on Fifth Avenue. Thinking about it it just makes my Black Card break a sweat.
Anyoverpriceddesignerclothing, the uber-fabulous woman that makes it all happen is the Senior Vice President of Women’s Fashion and Store Presentation and my personal friend and champion, Linda Fargo. Chic doesn’t even come close to describing.
Now, Bergdorf’s, Linda and Polyvore are coming together to bring you a fashion week contest to end all fashion week contests. From now until Monday, January 31st, you are able to dress La Fargo and to submit a collage depicting your salacious stylings. The winner will be flown to New York, given a $2,500 BG gift card, get their hair and make up done and they’ll get to see the shows of New York Fashion Week. For the cherry on to of the fashion sundae, Linda will don an outfit inspired by your creation to one of the shows.
For more info, check out Bergdorf Goodman’s blog.

Whenever I head out to the glorious city of Los Angeles to visit our west coast hotels, The Standard, Hollywood and The Standard, Downtown LA, I am usually most excited about delving into the local Mexican cuisine out there. There’s just no place like LA for authentic Mexican. You can get Tex Mex in Texas, but it’s just not the same.
The other day, I was cruising long the chic stretch of Elizabeth Street doing some Saturday shopping for the friends and family, and I came across what I thought was the most gorgeous art installation. There were lights strung, a VW bus, tables and chair and people strewn about like my designer clothes on a vintage Mies van der Rohe chair. You get the idea.
Arkitip lives by a noble mantra. “Support the arts. Support freedom of expression. Keep art affordable and accessible”. That is why Arkitip will be on hand at the Los Angeles International Contemporary Art Fair which is being held this weekend, from January 27 - 30, 2011. Expect to see the independent humble journal each day of the fair, offering a special 50% off fair discount on selected Limited issue editions.
Initially, the Fair began in West Hollywood at the Pacific Design Center, but the Art Fair has relocated in 2011 to the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The new big venue means more room for more art galleries. Think 40 foot ceilings. The Fair presents approximately 70 top galleries in the world, with a strong focus on Los Angeles galleries. Everyone is invited to come peruse the work — art collectors, curators, and patrons of the arts alike to enjoy.

Arkitip will be showing a curated collection of published works, print editions and collaborative projects. Special promotional giveaways will also be available to attendees. To use their words, “Come by, say hello, complete your collection”.
Fair Location is at The Barker Hangar, 3021 Airport Avenue Santa Monica, CA 90405. Hours are: Friday, January 28 is from 11:00 - 19:00. Saturday, January 29 is from 11:00 - 19:00, and Sunday, January 30 is from 11:00 - 18:00.
Ok. We’re not the type to complain at restaurants. We’re too classy for that. But we do envy Jack Nicholson’s chutzpah while trying to order toast. So for now, we’ll vicariously live through this Five Easy Pieces scene, brought to you by one our favorite bakers, Jess Chalkely, and her food blog Jess a’la Mode.
We’d like to introduce you to Punches, a band whose music you can find on our Standard Music Widget for January 2011 — located on the right side of this blog. Go ahead, you can stop reading this a sec, look for their song, hit play, then continue reading our interview with them below.

(Punches)
The Standard: Would you say Punches is a DJ collective instead of a band?
PUNCHES in an experience, neither limited by the members who make the music nor the people who enjoy the sound.
How did you guys first meet eachother and how did you figure out that together, you 3 make magic?
The three of us are Hungarian Jews and we figured out that our grandfathers were freedom fighters by night and street buskers by day in Budapest. As the second world war heated up, our grandfathers lost touch, eventually losing contact completely. Alan’s grandfather passed away in the late 90s and when Darin and Greg’s passed away a few years ago, Alan honored his grandfather’s request of singing at the funeral. Once Darin and Greg heard his voice, they knew they had to work together.
Anyone who’s been by The Standard, Downtown LA recently (or is our buddy on Facebook) may have noticed our latest 6th Street Mural Installation, a vibrant and colorful tribute to our home state by LA-based artist Skypage.

While the mural won’t live on forever, we’ve teamed up with Skypage and HVW8 gallery to create a set of 50 limited edition prints in reproduction of the original artwork.

First off, tell us a bit about your background, and what you do at The Standard?
I was born and raised in the most beautiful tropical country in Central America called El Salvador. At age 19, I wanted to live a better life and that’s when I decided to move to Los Angeles. My job at The Standard, Hollywood is a a runner and houseman in the housekeeping department.
What’s your favorite secret spot in Hollywood?
If I tell you my secret spot then it wouldn’t be a secret anymore.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo in the early 20th century. It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. That’s Jiu-Jitsu in a nutshell. (Thanks Wikipedia!)

(Get Schooled. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Professor Guilherme at The Standard Miami)
Now picture this. Professor Guilherme Arashiro (pictured above) being your teacher. Exciting isn’t it? Every Friday and Saturday, from 6:00 pm -7:30 pm, he will be sharing his wisdom and instruction on the practice to our guests or locals who sign up for his class (check the rest of the schedule here!). Guilherme is one of the most respected professors of this genre, so it’s a lucky treat to have his presence for a while at The Standard, Miami.

Meet the Sartorialist (aka Scott Schumann), a man who documents real people on the streets with quick snapshots. He doesn’t necessarily search for designer labels, instead he opts for people with a classic sense of style… people with some sort of unique vision of how to put themselves together. Shooting people in New York, Milan, Paris and other chic cities, now he makes the world your “digital bench”.
Most of us working with the fashion business know the blog and read it daily… but few of us know anything about him. Intel made this pretty sweet intimate mini doc, and flipped the camera on him for once. Directed by Tyler Manson.
P.S. The woman on the street he shoots is Cloak maker Lindsay Thornburg… another example of a classic woman.
Tune in for another installment of Desert Nights, The Standard, Hollywood’s acoustic night. This Wednesday’s line-up includes: The Chances, The Driftwood Singers, and Jack Diamond.

(Shepard Fairey ushers in Le Book’s Connections in Hollywood)
Last week Le Book celebrated its first West Coast Connections event in LA at The Standard, Hollywood. Le Book’s annual event — shall we say, mixers? — have been a fixture for designers, illustrators, creative directors, photographers, etc in New York City for several years. The name for the event is Connections, and it’s been held in New York, Paris, London and Hamburg. The annual event hosted by Le Book started in 2005 and is the veritable fashion, art and advertising industry networking event drawing creatives from companies like Nike and Banana Republic.
This week, Director Mathieu Wothke has introduced his new video for The Limousines. The visuals are a deep reminder that this barrage of software and graphics are truly a whole new language for this generation. We can’t stop staring at the visual narrative. We asked Mathieu about his new digital Frankenstein creation and the fate of music videos today.
THE LIMOUSINES from Mathieu Wothke on Vimeo.
Congrats on the new video. How many hours did it take to complete video and how did the idea come together?
Thank you very much, I think that after the shooting, it took a month and a half to do all the postproduction work: editing, animation, graphic research etc.

(Old School Keith Olbermann)
They say things happen in three’s, right? First it was Steve Jobs “temporarily stepping down” from Apple. Then Eric Schmidt announces he’s leaving Google. Now, it’s Keith Olbermann leaving MSNBC?
“Out with the Old, In with the New” — 2011 is looking like a wacky start.

Today’s graphic, “Teenage Lust”, is by Brooklyn’s own Hisham Bharoocha. Hisham is one of the New York underground community’s creative leaders, continually bringing together the visual art, music, and fashion communities for collaboration. Hisham is also well known in the underground music scene for being a founding member of the bands Lightning Bolt and Black Dice. After leaving Black Dice, he created his current band, Soft Circle, who always prove to be a delightfully cerebral band to experience.
Can everyone stop freaking out about Ricky Gervais’ Globe jokes? “If they didn’t want me, they shouldn’t have hired me”, Ricky tells Piers Morgan, whom laughs and replies back at him “It’s a bit like inviting a hammerhead to dinner”.
Both men proceed to discuss comedy, its intellectual nature, and its non-emotional nature. Ricky is pretty damn strong minded, eloquent, and charming (as usual) in this interview.

“And, don’t forget, just because you’re offended, doesn’t mean you’re in the right” says Ricky. “A lot of people are offended by mixed marriage. It doesn’t mean they are right.”
WORD. Watch the full interview on CNN. Now can we all just move on?

If there’s any time you should be jealous of me, it’s right now. I’ve taken a vacation and won’t be back until next week. I didn’t want to leave you hanging wondering where I was, so I’m going to share this one moment with you.
I’ve gone away to visit friends in Placencia, Belize. Yes, my Stan D’arlings. I’m in a remote part of Central America (but don’t you love that I can still be in touch with you?! I do.)
I’ve escaped to a small little oceanfront resort called Turtle Inn which is one of Francis Ford Coppola’s chic resorts around the world. Yes, the above photo is the view I’m enjoying right now. Don’t even get me started! I’ll be back next week, so hang in there for me. I won’t be gone long. Loving. Missing. Sun tanning!

A few months ago, a good friend joined the board of a new non-profit organization in LA that sounded, well, awesome. Launched in the summer of 2009 in Boston, The Awesome Foundation was designed to distribute monthly $1,000 grants in support of people’s pet projects - ideas that they’ve sunk their own money, time and most importantly heart into, but need a bit of a (monetary) push to help things really get off the ground. Since then chapters are springing up all around the globe, including very recently in our hometown, with the help of LA founder Dan Taberski. We’ll let him tell you more about the organization he knows, loves and helped to locally launch.
In the latest of Lady Gaga visual spectacles, here’s the latest video premiered on ThierryMugler.com and StyleList.com. The song (not yet released) has a special story to it. Nicola Formichetti, Gaga’s confidante and stylist, is now Directing the House of Mugler. Lady Gaga remixed this song herself for Formichetti’s first menswear show in Paris yesterday. This short film/video intersperses images of that show, and is directed by Mariano Vivanco.
Oh, yes, that’s not make-up on the skull-faced model either, that’s real tattoo work. His name is Rick Genest and his Facebook calls him “Zombie Boy”. Add him to the freak show festivities that only Gaga can usher in. The track is from her new album, Born This Way, to be released in May 2011.

Ahhhhh, the 80’s! A time for decadence, and silly T&A movies. Somehow, nudity seemed less offensive, and the films of the decade were just full of dirty high school jokes and harmless boob flashes. Phoebe Cates was the poster child of every teenage boy’s wet dream (see Fast Times at Ridgemont High).

Digging back in the bins, we recently bumped into the ‘ol soundtrack for Private School, a story of first loves and first romps starring —who else— Phoebe Cates and Matthew Modine. From the movie’s first song on opening credits (Harry Nilsson’s “You’re Breaking My Heart”), get ready to go on a time warp through the racy over-the-top 1980s. Think aerobics, leotards, arcade games, etc.
The soundtrack is a who’s who of the moment… a time capsule, if you will.
1. “You’re Breaking My Heart” - Harry Nilsson
2. “Rock This Town” - The Stray Cats
3. “She Said No” - Bill Wray
4. “Private School” - Bill Wray
5. “The American Girl” - Rick Springfield
6. “How Do I Let You Know” - Phoebe Cates
7. “Nasty Girl” - Vanity 6
8. “I Want Candy” - Bow-Wow-Wow
9. “Li’l Red Riding Hood” - Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs
10. “Just One Touch” - Phoebe Cates & Bill Wray
11. “All The Time” - Earl Klugh
12. “Best Years Of Our Lives” - Mens Room
13. “Da Da Da” - Trio

First off, tell us a bit about your background, and what you do at The Standard?
I’ve been working for The Standard for four years, first at The Standard, Downtown LA for three and a half years and the last few months at The Standard, Hollywood. As a side gig I’ve also been doing my thang in Hollywood as a dancer.
What’s your favorite secret spot in Hollywood?
It’s not really much of a secret but I really enjoy Runyon Canyon.
What’s one of your most memorable moments in the building?
All the awesome dance breaks with my peeps in Downtown & in Hollywood. You know who you are. *Wink*

Kanye West, Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, Kings of Leon, Interpol, Lauryn Hill, Sleigh Bells, The Kills, Nas, Cut Copy…. blah blah blah….
The time has come! Coachella has announced the big line-up for the 2011 Festival — Friday, April 15 thru Sunday, April 17th. To see the entire list of confirmed bands or purchase tickets, go to Coachella.com. Graphic found on Zisformars

Last night, The Standard, New York hosted the first in a series of panel discussions which you will begin to see more frequently within our hallowed halls. The CFDA pulled together retailing’s top masters for a discussion on the future of the industry. Panelists included my personal favorite Roopal Patel of Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, Jeffrey Kalinsky of Jeffrey, Alexis Maybank, Founder of Gilt Groupe, Jan-Hendrik Schlottman, CEO of Derek Lam and Paul Birardi of Odin.

(Introducing Limited Edition KAWS Bulbs with The Standard)
Calling all KAWS fans! The Standard is proud to announce a Limited Edition series of light bulbs (yes, you read correctly, light bulbs). This is the first time KAWS has created an item so unique compared to his existing body of work which includes the highly coveted toys, shoes, T-shirts, wallets, etc.

As you probably can already imagine, I spend a fair amount of time sitting pool side at The Standard, Miami recovering from (and trying to remember) the night before. There is only thing that can expedite the recovery and that’s Chef Mark Zeitouni’s huevos rancheros. Actually, since I eat them so often, he as selflessly renamed them STAN D’ARDE’S HUEVOS RANCHEROS! Olé! (I threw that last bit in there…)
These morsels of Mexican heaven are like a drunken caballero dance on the taste buds!
First, Chef heats up a warm tortilla then tops it with black bean purée, adds tree ripened Florida avocados, queso fresco, homemade ancho chipotle hot sauce and finishes it off with two perfectly poached eggs.
Honestly, don’t even call me crying over how to get one. Just drive, fly, catch a train, ride a bike, rollerblade, salsa, merengue or whatever you have to do to get yourself in front of a plate of this Stan D’eliciousness!!!

Valida Carroll is not only a striking tall blond with incredible music knowledge, she’s also The Standard’s very own Talent Coordinator. Valida is the one who curates our famous weekly called Desert Nights where three artists come perform intimate acoustic sets at The Standard Hollywood.
She first graced us with her presence by spinning every Thursday for 3 years at The Standard Downtown location. She still DJ’s for us once a week at The Standard Hollywood, so we haven’t lost her turntable skills yet. You can still see her every Wednesday night hosting Desert Nights with her energetic introductions of each musician. You can also hear her spin on KCRW in Los Angeles as she’s joined the DJ ranks alongside Marion Hodges and Jason Kramer as part of The Lab, on rotating Sundays from 3 to 6am.
We gave Valida our DJ quiz to learn more about her…

What is your DJ name?
Valida
What genre’s of music do you spin?
I am probably one of the most versatile DJs out there…and depending on my mood, setting, time, crowd, I can pretty much play anything from obscure disco, indie rock, folk, pop, hip hop, house, funk, soul, punk…..whatever the situation might call for…
Tell me the top 5 jams right now on the dancefloor?
Midnight Magic “Beam Me Up” (Jacques Renault Mix)
Storm Queen “Look Right Through feat. Damon C. Scott”
Miami Horror “I Look To You feat. Kimbra”
Adulture & OCD Automatic “Paper Cat” (Sammy Bananas Remix)
Mark Ronson and the Business Int. “Somebody To Love Me”
What is the stupidest request you have been asked?
Well, there is always that idiot that requests hip-hop just as I’m playing De la Soul or A Tribe Called Quest…or something “they can dance to” as I’m in the middle of a George Benson/MJ mix…
What year did you start DJ’ing?
I bought my turntables in 1998, but I wouldn’t start calling myself a DJ until 2001 when I had my first real residency at Star Shoes
Laptop? CD? iPod? Vinyl?
It really doesn’t matter the method as long as your head’s in the right place (OK, perhaps iPod DJs are pushing it)…technology is just a means to an end…I prefer vinyl or Serato with vinyl….
What is the 1 old-school classic you still bust out every time?
Kurtis Blow “The Breaks”
Do you have a special closing song of the night?
No…it changes every time…..sometimes I like to cut it off at the peak so you get that “oooh nooo!” reaction from the dance-floor…other times, I ease into it and end with something that might inspire some baby-making action, like Minnie Ripperton or Barry White….
What are your feelings about drinking and working?
Can I answer this after I run to the bar? My cup runneth dry…

(Karlheinz Weinberger, Lake Biel, St. Petersinsel, 1963)
We just love a well documented random niche. Imagine this one. Switzerland’s juvenile delinquents in the 60’s (and late 50’s). Photographer Karlheinz Weinberger’s life spanned 1921 to 2006. The New York Times reviewed Mr. Karlheinz’s work in 2004.
Vice Magazine’s current issue (the “Barking Dog” issue) writes about Karlheinz “having his style ripped off by contemporary fashion designers, photographers, and stylists, like, all the time.”
Up until now, if you wanted to buy his book, you’d have to bid at least $500 on eBay for the out of print copy. Thank God Rizzoli got on the case and is releasing a new book on Feb 8th. Look for Rebel Youth soon. In the meantime, read the article at Vice.
It’s time for yet another round up of musical talent at this week’s Desert Nights, our weekly event at The Standard, Hollywood. Here are the 3 acts to be featured in our cozy Cactus Lounge inside the hotel.
