It’s Friday afternoon and we’re well aware that everybody’s working for the weekend. Still, we wanted to take a moment to let you know that it would be wise to save some of those killer dance moves for Monday night, when NY-based DJ Jonathan Toubin blows into town to take over The Rooftop with New York Night Train Soul Clap and Dance-Off! We’re honored to host the first occurrence of this party anywhere in LA and can’t wait to see who best shakes their moneymaker for $100 cash.

DJ Jonathan Toubin is already out on the road but took a few moments to answer our Standard DJ quiz. Here is what he had to say…

The Standard: What is your DJ name? Why?

Jonathan Toubin: DJ pseudonyms are corny and I’d never accept one…accept for “DJ Dances With White Girls”, whose name is actually clever…  

What genres of music do you spin?

I’ll play any genre as long as the specific track has killer drums and guitars, can’t be identified by many people, and fits into the “best music of all time” category.

What is the one old-school classic you still bust out every time?

A DJ who works almost every night should never bust out the same record every time. 

Do you have a special closing song of the night?

I have dozens of special closing songs of the night that always change. My first year I had only one though - Mickey Gilley’s “All The Girls Look Prettier at Closing Time” - guaranteed to both make people feel awkward and evacuate the premises.
