Why Bring a Boring Towel to the Pool?

Thanks to a partnership with Opening Ceremony and the Art Production Fund (under the umbrella of the former’s ongoing project WOW, or Works on Whatever), The Standard is stocking artist-customized towels.

The latest installment of this collaboration presents two towel designs premiered at The Standard Spa, Miami Beach during Art Basel Miami Beach from December 2-6, 2009. Revered Japanese pop artist Yoshitomo Nara and celebrated British landscape artist Peter Doig each customized one of the terrycloth canvases. Past artists have included Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman, Karen Kilimnik and Raymond Pettibon.

Yoshitomo’s iconic little girl — eyes closed, lips relaxed — is one graphic, while Peter’s visual transports the viewer to a lush jungle where a man in a swimsuit stands poised in front of a waterfall.

Available both in The Standards’ gift shops and the online boutique, the towels retail for $95 and are 100% cotton. The functional pieces of art work just as well in the bathroom as they do poolside. Sotheby’s helped make the partnership possible, while part of sales will go to benefit the APF, which is a non-profit organization that helps contemporary artists facilitate ambitions through undertakings and broaden their reach… altogether bringing public awareness while nurturing the arts.
