The Standard: First off, tell us a bit about your background, and what you do at the Standard?

Alexander: I’m from the beautiful Caribbean coastal city of Santa Marta in Colombia. Fluent in 4 languages (Spanish, English, Portuguese and Italian). I have an Associate degree in Tourism and Hotel management but Worked as a TEFL certified Language teacher for 7 years in various cities in my home country and abroad, this before starting in the hospitality industry. At The Standard Spa, I’m “the man with many hats”, I go from giving guests a warm welcoming, to assisting them with their luggage, then hopping in behind the Front Desk doing a Check-In, next minute I’m giving someone directions on how to get to the hottest spots in South Beach… all for a single main purpose — Ensuring my guests would have the BEST experience in a hotel ever!

What’s your favorite secret spot in Miami?

If I’d tell you I would have to kill you … Not really! Well, is not that much of a secret. I find this spot in South Pointe park very beautiful, calm and serene. That’s where I go to meditate and/or simply enjoy the magnificent view

iPhone or Blackberry? What APP do you use the most? 

ANDROID!!! I love my Evo! But to answer the question I would tend more towards the iPhone (shhhh…Don’t let my Evo hear that!).

Latest App would be a Barcode scanner… Last time I was in the Mall I scanned everything that had barcodes. Couldn’t help it!…People were giving me these looks.

What’s one of your most memorable moments in the building? 

I was helping a lady with her bags upon check-out, she was being picked up by her husband and their 5 year old son and as I finished loading her belongings into the car’s trunk, the 5 year-old son pulls his head out to thank me stretching his arm to a hand shake and saying….. “Thank you mister bellman for helping my mom, God bless you, God bless you mister bellman for taking care of my mom”… Memorable!

What is your favorite movie based in a hotel?

“Just Go With It” …. Those little kids were hilarious!

How has 2011 treated you so far?

It’s been a great year so far, tho it started with some personal challenges which led to a greater self esteem and believing that one is capable of overcoming any situation if you believe in yourself and have faith.

When you finally break free from work, what is the next awesome place you plan to vacation to?

Tayrona National Park in Santa Marta, Colombia …. Great place, beautiful beaches, snow peak mountains in the background, crystal clear rivers …. absolutely amazing!
