On this hallowed day, August 16, the world was given Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone to teach us how to love ourselves (usually with one hand), how to express ourselves to the masses (using video cameras in the privacy of our own homes) and how to remain timelessly youthful (via Photoshop and other technological marvels).
So with this we wish you, Lady M, a very Happy Birthday.
This Saturday, Blu Jemz is back at Le Bain “in straight outta Paris mode” with his Night People, Eli Escobar and Lloydski. Need some warm up? We asked our three Saturday Knights to come up with a video Selection.

(Madonna and Sean Penn on Date Mode at Elaine’s)
Our hearts are crushed by the loss of one of New York’s institutions, the restaurant we all call Elaine’s. The woman behind Elaine’s was Elaine Kaufman, the soul behind the famous little secret in the upper east side. Back in the days, on any given night, you’d see Norman Mailer and Walter Cronkite on one side of the room or Diana Ross and Diane Keaton in the other corner. Elaine was the lady in charge. Everyone knew her and loved her. She passed away this last December 2010, but it was announced in May 2011 that the restaurant is shutting it’s doors. There’s no ship without a captain, and Elaine was the only captain for this precious spot.
Take a peek at Life Magazine’s archives of photos through the years.
RIP Elaine’s —the building and the woman!
There are very few videos that make you say to yourself, “Damn! I wish I could have been in that video.” For me, it has always been Madonna’s Deeper & Deeper. Best. Video. EVER!
This morning, the kids over at @VManMagazine and our favorite Stan D’J, @TSMeriam, sent in this extraterrestrial work of art. Nothing says STAN more than fog machines, metallic silver pants and random bursts of glitter. I should have been in this!
We travel the world more than anyone we know. We’ve been to places on this green earth that even God probably doesn’t know about. Wherever we go, we always have three very close friends with us…Madonna, Edith Piaf and George Michael. Yes, we know. Edith Piaf is dead, but we never said that she herself was with us on our trips. We live La Vie En Rose through her music. And while Madonna is too busy adopting African babies and George Michael is overwhelmed trying to find new ways in which to lewdly conduct himself, we still send them postcards because we’re constantly thinking of our friends.
The last time we climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to watch the sunrise over the African lowlands, we were blasting George’s Freedom 90 on our new iPod shuffle. And that’s the truth! You want to know what else is the truth? When we pushed play on the iPod, that damn thing said outloud to us “George Michael…Freedom ‘90”! We thought we were hallucinating from the lack of oxygen at 19,340 feet up. Did this little thing just speak to us?!?!
We had to make sure we weren’t losing it, so we went to the next song, and the thing said to us “Madonna….Express Yourself”. Turns out this little gadget has a new feature called VoiceOver which enables it to tell you what song is playing and who is singing it. It can also tell you the names of your playlists opening up a whole new way to navigate your music. And when you’re beginning to hallucinate on the top of heighest point in Africa, you’ll need all the help you can get.
Now, we never leave home without it, and for only $79, you probably shouldn’t either.
