The sun is out in full force again - check out these pictures and savor the last days of summer.
This Thursday for Fashion’s Night Out, ROGAN and Loomstate are facing off with a group of city surf friends, showing original works with some proceeds going to charity. Come with, friendz.
Quiksilver is among us! Graphic of the day, from the archives of Dane Reynolds.
Back in June The Standard, Hollywood hosted a Drawing Salon with artist Ryan McGinness. We had such a blast that we decided to make it a regular thing. Next Thursday, August 25th, will mark the return of the Drawing Salon! We’re partnering with New Image Art Gallery for the event and have lined up some breathtaking models to get those creative juices flowing. This month’s models will be outfitted in The Standard’s bathing suit collaboration with Quiksilver and will feature fantastic accessories by Karen Walker.
We’ll provide some paper and pencils but you’re welcome to bring your own supplies if you want to get fancy (just no oils or acrylics, please).
The figure drawing is free and open to the public so there’s no excuse not to brush off your palette, grab a cocktail, and let your inner artist unfurl!
While you’re deciding which Standard Boardshort is your favorite, you can gear up for the 4th Annual NYSFF slated for September 15-17, 2011! The New York Surf Film Festival is the premier showcase for international independent surf film. The mission of the New York Surf Film Festival is to provide filmmakers who are exploring the diversity of surfing an opportunity to present their work to a larger audience. As surf culture becomes more popular, the notion of what it means to be a surfer expands. The New York Surf Film Festival’s aim is to build upon and shape the idea of what a surf movie is, while fostering the growth of this global community in NYC.
The 2011 International Screening Panel includes:
• Grant Washburn, Big Wave Surfer
• Ron Schein, Surf Journalist + Artist
• Gerry Lopez, Mr. Pipeline
• Micah Abrams, Senior Action Sports Editor, ESPN + Screenwriter
• Buzzy Kerbox, Legend
For questions, tickets, or show times, email firstname.lastname@example.org or visit New York Surf Festival on Facebook.
Okay, okay, we realize that Stan D’Arde - in typical Stan behavior - might have spilled the beans a bit, but here you have the official announcement: the third edition of The Standard boardshorts made by Quiksilver are here! Like last time, they are inspired by each of the four hotels in New York, Downtown LA, Hollywood and Miami. Get your own pair (or one signed by a star surfer - just keep reading…) at our poolside vending machines or at www.ShopTheStandard.com.
Of course, that’s not all. In the past two years we gave you a killer parties to celebrate the release in both LA and then Miami, but this year we’re bringing it to New York and offering a home to Quiksilver Pro, the largest surf competition to ever take place in New York where the winner gets $1 million - the largest prize given at any surf competition ever! Plus there is a slew of amazing music performances like Flaming Lips, Girl Talk, and Interpol (more info here).
September 2nd marks the kick off party, at where else? Le Bain. Before the festivities begin you can catch Tony Hawk in our backyard at Pier 54 - details in the video below.
We’re not done - leading up to Quik Pro you can expect lots more on Standard Culture, including exclusive interviews with star surfers, playlists that will make you want to cover your nose in zink and ride a wave immediately, and of course a chance to get amazing prizes yourself, like VIP surfing lessons, signed boardshorts, and more. Just stay tuned or follow @standarde and @standardny for constant updates.
Now that Swim Week is over, we wanted to congratulate all the talented Designers that showcased their new collections recently in Miami. We love a good swimsuit ourselves and carry a wide variety at our our own shop inside The Standard Miami, as well as our sister hotel, Sunset Beach.
We checked in with two of our designers to gauge their week. The first is Salinas, by Rosana Lara. Her inspiration for this summer are the songs written for Rio de Janeiro, its places, the lifestyle, warmth, freshness and happiness that inspired the chroniclers, poets and songwriters. She creates her suits as the incarnate of the energy Brazil powerfully reflects.
