Julia Chiang’s Opening

Tuesday night was Julia Chiang’s art opening presenting new works entitled Security is Mostly a Superstition. Julia is one of our beloved guest bloggers for the Standard Culture site. The opening, held at the Half Gallery, contained a room size installation of white chains, handcrafted of ceramic links. Julia’s sculpture work traditionally seems a simple item at first, but a pause usually begets more thoughts, delving into deeper themes that tickle the mind. In this case, the chains evoke a spirit “marked by connectivity and confinement”.

The opening and dinner were good vibes all around. It was a gathering of downtown creatives including KAWS, Peter Sutherland, Eric Elms, Anna Sheffield, Jose Parla, Bill McMullen, Todd James, and Todd Jordan among others — all of whom gathered to witness and celebrate Julia’s meteoric rise in the art scene.

Jake Sumner’s New Video

In our endless quest to find creative new videos to hit the internet, we bring you the new track for Frankie and the Heartstrings called “Hunger” found on Wichita Recordings. The mind who created this lo-fi universe is Jake Sumner, a young director we all have our eyes on, and who is furiously creating an impressive body of work. Did we mention he can also beat anyone hands down in a “dance-off” at a club? The man has skills

We stopped Jake during his whirlwind travel schedule to ask him a few questions about his inspirations, fond childhood memories, and living in the Congo.

New York Street Photography

One our great creative contributors to The Standard, Cheryl Dunn, has completed a powerful documentary on the elusive spirit of New York photography. Cheryl was commissioned by The Seaport Museum, New York, to make a documentary about photographers who have used New York City street life as a common thread in their work. Produced by ALLDAYEVERYDAY, Everybody Street premiered at the museum in part with the exhibit Alfred Stieglitz New York, and was released in segments by The New Yorker magazine.

In order of appearance, photographer vignettes were Clayton Patterson, Joel Meyerowitz, Martha Cooper, Mary Ellen Mark, Bruce Gilden, Luc Sante, Bruce Davidson, and Rebecca Lepkoff. The film also features Tim Barber, Jeff Mermelstein, Ricky Powell, Jamel Shabazz, and Bonnie Yochelson. Dunn shot the street footage in New York City on a 16-mm. Beaulieu.

Everybody Street was screened twice a day at the Seaport Museum for the full run of Alfred Stieglitz New York, which opened mid September last year. The good news is the show is up now but will be running only a few more days with a closing date of January 10, 2011.

Team Standard for Tied Together

(The Standard Hotel, NYC, Running Team for Nike’s Tied Together Race)

Once in a while, The Standard hotel rallies their troops for some good causes. In this case, it was running a race for Nike’s Tied Together initiative to raise awareness for Aids in Africa (definitely take a sec to check out the trailer here and the recap video here). It was a 5 day race spanning 5 cities in the world — New York, London, Milan, Berlin, and Paris — all leading up to World Cup.

It was an epic journey in response to a health crisis. Staffer Laura Nolte comments on the day Team Standard ran. Another team that ran was Standard collaborators & guest bloggers Saturdays Surf Shop.
