Fashion meets art with Barry McGee.
More from Chris Mosier’s Wanderlust Chronicles here.
Barry McGee is a street legend. His work began appearing on the streets of San Francisco in the early 1990s. If you read the names “Ray Fong”, “Twist” and “Twisto” on the streets those days, then you were seeing all of his multiple tags running amok. Barry operated under different names, and he liked it that way. The mission district introduced a legion of other graffiti writers including Clare Rojas, Chris Johanson and Aaron Noble — all wonderfully documented in the film Beautiful Losers which spawned a movement in contemporary art. The documentary’s Director, Aaron Rose, has edited a book of Barry’s work called THR.
