To Bee or not to Bee?

Last month’s Spelling Bee at The Standard, Hollywood was a night of pure adventure packed with agonizing defeat and thrilling victories.  This month’s Bee, to be held August 18th, promises to be just as enthralling.  The theme this month is fashion, and will be hosted by none other Rose Apodaca, pop culture & style journalist, author, and the “R” in LA’s fantastic design shop, A+R.

Much like last month, we’ll be gathering our contestants from the creme of the crop of LA’s fashion world.  We’re going to ply them with drinks, give them a little SmartWater for electrolytes, and then we will be testing their knowledge of all things fashion related and, for added thrills, also asking them to spell the the answers.

The evening will be fashion forward and grammatically fantastic! See you then!

A Beeautiful Evening!

Last night’s Spelling Bee at The Standard, Hollywood was a smashing success! The theme was film and the audience was enthralled as some of LA’s best and brightest answered film trivia and then tried to spell it. Writer, Caroline Ryder was the overall winner impressing the fashionable crowd with 8 correctly spelled words.  The Comedy Store’s Alf Lamont was a close second with 5 ½ words spelled correctly.  The ½ point was awarded for style, Alf incorrectly guessed that Fellini’s fourth Oscar was awarded for his film  La Dolce Vita (it was actually Amarcord) but was assessed the ½ point for answering completely in perfect Italian.

Radical Media’s Michael Dimitri, Artist/Director Britt Browne, Photographer Shaniqwa Jarvis, and artist/set-designer Alice Lodge were the Bee’s other contestants.   Los Angeles Times Book Critic David Ulin played the charming and sympathetic host.

Bee There or Bee Square!

It’s got it all the makings of a classic thriller: Suspense, action, drama, tension, and a touch of comedy.   Honestly, what could be more enthralling than a good spelling bee?   Join us, Thursday, July 7th at The Standard, Hollywood for a chance to witness vocabularic glory.   In a wry nod to the neighborhood, this month’s spelling bee theme is Cinema and our contestants are a ragtag bunch of filmmakers, agents, cinema buffs, and general nerds (in the best sense of the word).  We’ll be testing their knowledge of all things film related and then, for added thrills, asking them to spell them. Sure, everyone knows who Shia Labeouf is, but could you spell his name correctly without looking after a couple cocktails?   See, not as easy as it seems, right?
