In our relentless quest to feed you with good music, we’re back to remind about our January playlist, a whole new set of songs to download for free from our website. Look to the right hand side of this webpage (see the Standard music widget?)… and behold 40 free tracks to download this month. Each of the Standard Hotels (New York, Miami, and Los Angeles) have their own special mix of songs proving a specific vibe for each hotel.
Our New York playlist this month features the Passion Pitt’s classic tune “Sleepyhead” except this one is “LeChev’s remix”, a joyful track deserving of your iPod. Who doesn’t love a good remix?
Visit our music widget which is also placed on our Music Page of the Standard Culture site.
Joey Arias in Concert

Mark your calendars. Joey Arias is performing on Monday in New York city, at Le Poisson Rouge. His previous run (last October) at the Abron’s Art Center was fully sold out and a raging success. This time, Joey will be performing a few of his classic tunes (one performance only) with that show stopping-voice that melts your heart.
Musical direction is by Ben Allison, with a band comprised of some of the finest jazz musicians in New York. The show is presented by Earl Dax. The New York Times says Joey “channels Billie Holiday with eerie precision”. If you’ve never seen Joey perform, get yourself to this intimate performance.
Monday, January 10, 2011. Performance is at 6:30 pm.

Tickets are $35. Reserve your seats. Purchase here.

Winter Drinks: The House Eggnogs

(Get Your Fancy Eggnog On. Photo by Chad Matthew Carlson)
If you want to mess with the egg drink during holidays, you’ll need a real mixologist to master the tricky genre. But when it all comes together, a proper cocktail from this family of drinks is a cozy beacon of light during a cold winter. Here are a few egg-based cocktail tips and recipes to begin whipping up in the kitchen right now (courtesy of the mixmasters at Details Magazine). Our favorite is the one called “The Notorious F.L.I.P.”

Tumblr’s We Love: Marianne Faithfull

(Marianne Faithfull is Playing The Standard New York for New Years)
In our series of Tumblr’s we love, here is a batch of blogs committed to the love of music, counterculture, or rock bohemia. Each are different but at some point, we’ve seen a Marianne Faithfull plug somewhere on it.
With a blog that opens with the phrase, “Fuck Yeah Marianne Faithfull”, this blogger writes, “I’m a girl in my early 20s who got into Marianne first and foremost through her amazing music.” She then goes on to post her collection of Marianne pics throughout the years. Read more on Faithfull Forever Tumblr
Another writer, Moira, who is 18. just loves “pre-code bad girls”, British invasion bands, Alice White, old movies, and bohemia. P.S. She’s also shameless Keith Richards fangirl. You can read hers at The Good Bad Girl Tumblr
Another Tumblr just revolves around classic music icons. Her tagline reads, “Without music, life would be a mistake.” -Friedrich Nietzsche. Read Audio Soup Tumblr
Marianne will be performing at The Standard New York for New Years. To reserve your tickets as soon as possible for the big bash ushering you into 2011 with the woman herself, read more here.

Secret Travel Item: Aiko

(Secret Travel Item: The “Dont-Leave-Home-Without” Lucky Paint Pants by Aiko)
Lady Aiko is an artist born from the streets. We wrote about her earlier in the year when she first hit up our walls inside Le Bain stairwells at The Standard New York. During Art Basel, we inquired about her one secret travel item. Her answer? A lucky pair of “paint pants”. Aiko has never traveled without them since she first ever started making art. For some mystical reason, the magic pants serve as a constant reminder to make her feel like she did when she first started painting.
