Let’s Talk About Sex(uality)

It’s no secret that I love ADIDAS, and although the name actually is an abbreviation for its creator Adi Dasler, it’s urban fiction that it stands for All Day I Dream About Sex. Well, coming this Monday, you don’t have to dream about it because we’re bringing it to you live, on the third floor of The Standard, New York!
WAIT WAIT WAIT! We’re not bringing you sex live! We’re presenting the second installment of our Standard Talks series in conjunction with Sunny Bates, Cool Hunting and Russian Standard. This time around the topic of discussion will focus on sexuality, gender identity and all those taboo topics you were never able to discuss with Mommy Dearest.
Sunny has curated a stellar panel consisting of former Kinsey Institute head, Dr. June Reinisch, Transgender Filmmaker, Kimberley Reed (she used to be a quarterback!) and Make Love Not Porn’s Cindy Gallop. There’s one more FABULOUS element of surprise. Well, it’s not a surprise, because I’m about to tell you. Alterna-Drag Superstar Jomama Jones née Daniel Alexander will be doing a little show of sorts…..but you have to come to see it.
The Exploration takes place this Monday June 13th from 6:30pm - 8:30pm in the High Line Room on the third floor of The Standard, New York. RSVP is essential or you won’t be let in. Just sayin’….
xoxo

Standard Talks: Summoning The Ghosts

In the second installment of our monthly Standard Talks series, we have once again teamed up with Sunny Bates and the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature to bring you And At Night…She Summons The Ghosts!
The evening will bring together Mario Ballatin, Corinne May Botz, Khersti Annesdatter Skomsvold, Richard McGuire, Craig Taylor and Russian Standard Vodka to delve into the supernatural to explore ghostly images, the paranormal and to hopefully summon a literary ghost or two…
“Mark Twain…Can you hear me? If you’re here, Mark. Please give us a sign!”
Okay, maybe it won’t go that far, but I know you know what we’re talking about. S’mores & and mini-cookies will be on hand, and for those of you who can’t handle the fear, The Hamlet and The Poltergeist, two spooky cocktails, will be served courtesy of Russian Standard. BOO!

TedxEast - The Talks Continue

Joining the conversation is one of the most powerful points of progress in the development of one’s existence. Don’t worry I’m not going to get all deep on you. I just mean that when one sits in a room and becomes a part of a discussion moving into the future, you feel that you are an agent of change. That’s part of the reason why we began The Standard Talks series, and why we continue to promote this exchange of ideas, specifically with our partnership with TEDxEast.
Earlier this week, TEDxEast - the independently organized spin off of the infamous TED conference - converged in the third floor High Line Room at The Standard, New York in a discussion on architecture and design. Hosted by Joshua Prince-Ramus and Bjarke Ingels, both recently named among the top 5 in Fast Company’s Most Innovative in Architecture 2011 and both former TED speakers, the conversation dealt with the forces that influence their current projects found as near as Texas and as far as Istanbul.
If you missed this one, don’t worry, we have more to come. The next Standard Talks will take place on April 27th during the PEN World Voices Literary Festival and will delve into the supernatural while Sunny Bates and her panel of paranormals will summon the ghosts at the stroke of midnight. Buy your tickets here.
Standard Talks: Villagers & Werewolves

Last night, Sunny Bates kicked off the first monthly Standard Talks in the High Line room at The Standard, NY to unprecedented success. The talk on the table? Game Theory as witnessed through a couple of rounds of Werewolf.
For those of you who are not familiar with this game, its roots started in 1980s Russia with a game called Mafia. After the end of the cold war, the game spread across the globe and morphed into this hairy phenomenon. Played with a group of 10 “villagers” and 2 “werewolves” within their midst, the townspeople are slowly killed off while suspicion is cast, lies are told and fates are sealed.
Standard Talks

Sharing of ideas and communication has been at the core of human existence since the beginning of time. Without this exchange, the progression of humanity would never have come this far. Bridges would not have been built. Automobiles would not have existed. The internet would be nothing but a dream in one man’s mind.
Always at the heart of the creative communities, The Standard Hotels, in partnership with Cool Hunting, have created Standard Talks, a monthly forum where leaders of industry gather to discuss current topics spanning the fields of Art, Fashion, Design, Culture, Sex, Entertainment, Science, Architecture and more.
The talks will be curated by Sunny Bates, a member of the Brain Trust of TED, and a slew of very special guests who will explore, monthly, various topics including Game Theory, Sleep & Dreams, Lies & Secrets, the Anatomy of Desire and the Body as a Mobile Landscape.
As has proven the case for centuries, this exchange of information will only better the future, and of course, it’s happening at a Standard near you.
