The Black Jesus formed in the Fall of 2009 after singer/songwriter Wade Ryff escaped the sweaty grips of multiple unhealthy bands, the San Fernando Valley and a real life witch. LA WEEKLY says “There is nothing cool about Wade Ryff. Not only does he deserve all the scrutiny headed his way, he is a loser, and if that does not give an idea of how marvelous the Black Jesus is then you are worse off then the band.” The Black Jesus is currently working on its debut release The Year of the Child E.P expected in Winter of 2010.

Daniel Brummel’s alchemical folk hymns draw their inspiration from such natural sources as mountains, lucid dreams, synchronicity, and David Lynch films. The singer/multi-instrumentalist played guitar, piano, clarinet, Indonesian flute, harmonica, mandolin, drums, and dozens of other instruments on his 2005 solo debut, Speak Easy, a hermetic tour-de-force rich with earthen acoustic textures, Appalachian murder ballads, and a contrapuntal ingenuity that reflects his years of training in UCLA’s composition departmen
Over fifteen years deep in Los Angeles’ music scene, Daniel has written, recorded, and/or performed with a wide variety of acts including Spain, the Holy Habits, Ozma, Sanglorians, Emily Lacy, Miranda Lee Richards, Bad Dudes, Monstro, Yellow Alex, Gowns, and the Elected. Also a committed music educator, Daniel is a faculty member at the California College of Music, and hosts folk singing workshops at Machine Project Gallery and the L.A. Central Library.

Emily Lacy is a folk and electronic sound artist generating works in music, film, and other media. She has performed in exhibitions at PS1 MOMA, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Hammer Museum, and LACMA, in addition to various living rooms and DIY spaces all throughout America. She works very closely with Machine Project.

What is Desert Nights?
Desert Nights is a weekly gathering at The Standard, Hollywood. Every Wednesday, we curate 3 musical acts on the rise to perform a special acoustic set in our hotel lounge. The vibe is warm and intimate, evoking an impromptu jam in a musician’s living room. Also, expect 2 clever cover songs delivered by each performer. The sets begins at 7:30 pm in the Cactus Lounge (thus the title of the evening, Desert Nights).
